What the room gets

One Vierti keypad on the wall in place of the switch bank, controlling the main light. A second dimmable layer, the wall lights, the pendants or the perimeter, runs from an in-line dimmer hidden at the fitting. Two layers is the minimum for scenes to feel like scenes rather than a light being turned down.

Scenes are set once at commissioning and recalled from the keypad, the Lutron app or a schedule that follows sunset. The wall shows a keypad. The modules stay out of sight.

How the wireless system works

RadioRA 3 runs on Clear Connect Type X, which is a mesh. Each mains-powered device needs two others within roughly 8 metres, and everything sits within roughly 23 metres of the processor. The keypad and the in-line dimmer are the two mains-powered nodes, which is the minimum viable system. Picos are battery powered and do not act as mesh nodes.

What is not included

Installation, programming and commissioning are quoted separately. RadioRA 3 has to be commissioned by a certified Lutron installer, so this is not a self-install product. The processor supplied runs from a mains adapter rather than PoE, because most Irish homes have no PoE switch.

Where it goes next

Add the second room with the Room 2 pack, which does another room to the same standard, two dimmable circuits and one keypad, with no new processor and no second commissioning visit. Open-plan kitchen and dining usually needs an extra dimmable circuit, added as a single line. Pico remotes are an add-on wherever a keypad cannot go, beside a sofa or at the top of the stairs. After lighting, the usual order is Lutron Triathlon battery blinds, then Sivoia QS wireless shading where wiring already exists.
